Guardian News & Media Ltd. is one of the most successful and innovative media organisations in the world, renowned for leading edge journalism, product and commercial development, and famous for nurturing talented individuals.
The Guardian is committed to a "digital-first" strategy in which digital revenues are forecast to double by 2016. In order to contribute towards this, we're expanding our Development Team and are looking for Software Developers who really understand what developing for the web means.
Amongst our innovative projects is the www.guardian.co.uk website itself, which serves 1200 requests a second with virtually no downtime. Our Content API allows internal and external projects to access the 400 plus pieces of content the Guardian creates daily - this allowed our sector-leading, live blogging platform that has just recorded every event in the Olympics simultaneously.
Our technology choices are driven by the needs of our products: we use Backbone, RequireJS, HTML5, Scala, Play, MongoDB, Python and Java, Spring and Hibernate. We are rapidly adopting the principles of responsive design to applications. We deploy on the most appropriate platforms whether that is EC2, Google Appengine or our own datacentres and we allow our developers to own their own environments and deploy their own products.
We embrace open-software and seek to contribute to the projects we use as well as open-sourcing our own software. Our developers talk about their experiences developing demanding solutions at conferences and in the development community. We seek to help our audience participate in reporting and understanding the news via our Open Journalism initiative.
We're passionate, innovative developers who take pride in what we do and how we do it. If you're interested in joining us then get in touch and tell us why you are the right person to help us bring the Guardian to a global audience.
This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.
